231 Raised in Africa, Israel, and Europe, Amit Apel enjoys learning and experiencing various cultures. This lust for adventure led him to Southern California in 1999 where the fifth-generation exterior and interior designer purchased a modest Honda Magnum motorcycle to travel across the USA for three months. After his adventurous, cross- country tour and with little means, he opened a humble, 100-square-foot art studio within a locksmith shop on the beaches of Malibu. He instantly became a local, buzz- worthy artist. A year later, he opened Amit Apel Design and now partners with architect Michael MacLaren. Together their team works with professionals throughout the world to create award-winning commercial, residential and interior designs in Europe, Asia, South America, and the United States. Regardless of where the project is located, the approach begins by translating the client's vision. Throughout the design process the team utilizes everything from the site to indigenous materials to create spaces that surprise and nourish the soul. a r c h i t e c t u r e AMIT APEL DESIGN WOODLAND HILLS, CA LEFT: The Beverly Hills residence was not built on a desirable site. Negative aspects of the property were turned into positives through the design of a structure that looks into itself. The pool hugs the house while various elevations of balconies and terraces add interest in addition to a host of angles in unexpected places. Photograph courtesy of Amit Apel Design
